Saint-Félix Cocagne Festival: A Traditional Easter Celebration Near Toulouse

Jul 6, 2026

Staying in Toulouse for business? Why not extend your trip over the weekend or plan a short getaway with your partner or family? Just 40 km (25 miles) southeast of the city, the Saint-Félix-Lauragais Cocagne Festival is one of the most celebrated traditional events in the Haute-Garonne region. Every Easter Sunday, this charming medieval village comes alive with historical reenactments, local traditions, and festive entertainment that showcase the area's rich heritage.

Why Is This Area Known as the "Pays de Cocagne"?

The name Pays de Cocagne refers to the historic region stretching between Toulouse, Albi and Carcassonne. During the 15th and 16th centuries, the area flourished thanks to the cultivation of woad, a plant used to produce a highly prized blue dye. This period of remarkable prosperity gave rise to the expression Pays de Cocagne, which has since become synonymous with abundance, celebration, and the French art of living.

What Can You Expect at the Saint-Félix Cocagne Festival?

First launched in the early 1970s, the Cocagne Festival is now brought to life each year by more than 100 local volunteers. The highlight of the day is the traditional greasy pole challenge (Mât de Cocagne), where participants attempt to climb a six-metre pole coated in grease to win local delicacies, including regional cured meats and artisan food products. Throughout the day, visitors can also enjoy colourful historical parades featuring dozens of costumed performers dressed as musketeers, hussars and villagers in period costumes handcrafted by the local sewing workshop. The festival also celebrates Occitan heritage through demonstrations of traditional crafts, including woad dyeing, wood carving and historical coin minting, offering an authentic glimpse into the region's past.

Local Specialities to Try

Food is an essential part of the festivities, making the festival an ideal opportunity to discover the flavours of the Lauragais region. Don't miss millas, a traditional cornmeal dish slowly cooked in a cauldron before being sliced, pan-fried and sprinkled with sugar. You'll also find oreillettes, delicate crispy pastries flavoured with orange blossom. For lunch, locals and visitors gather to enjoy the region's famous cassoulet, prepared with mountges, the traditional white beans grown locally in Lauragais.
